The legislative decree confirms that from 2025/26 access to Medicine for studies in Italy will be open in the first semester, without an initial entrance exam. The option does not disappear: it is transferred to the end of the filter semester, based on the results achieved in the exams.
Registration for the filter semester at the medical, dental and veterinary schools of Italian universities :
Access to the first semester of Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine courses at Italian universities will be open to all students. Any student wishing to study medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine in Italy can register for the filter semester up to three times. This is a substantial innovation that transforms the first semester into a field selection phase.
What happens after the first semester?

At the end of the filter semester, to continue in Medicine you will need:
-pass all required exams (biology-chemistry-physics)
-obtain all established CFU units;
-to be included in the national evaluation ranking.
Those who achieve these goals will be admitted to the second semester at one of the locations indicated during the registration phase.

Almost one in two students will be accepted to the schools of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine at Italian-speaking universities . This is the ratio between the number of students enrolled (54,300) in the introductory semester that begins on September 1 and the available places announced by the Italian Ministry of Education, which are 24,026. Never before have so many places been opened for the schools of medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine at Italian-speaking universities in Italy, because the aim, starting this year, is to give more students who wish to study in Italy a real opportunity and to address the country's urgent need for doctors. For those dreaming of a medical degree, 2025/2026 will be an unforgettable year: with 24,026 available places for medicine and surgery at state and private universities, it will be an all-time record. This represents 3,002 more places than last academic year and 8,191 more than in 2022.
Italy allows you to enter selected universities without exams in the departments of pharmacy and biology.
Student selection begins in mid-July.
